Hi,
I primarily use Hide My IP (premium) to access the BBC iPlayer from the US. Hide M IP works well for downloading shows, with very good speeds, but streaming video is unwatchable (I typically get maybe 2 seconds of video, followed by a 5 second pause, andother 2 seconds of video, etc.). While I can download most shows from the BBC, other channles (notably ITV and Channel 4) only offer streaming video and so this is a problem for me.
The BBC iPlayer offers a diagnostic facility (BBC iPlayer - Diagnostics) which is accesible from outside the UK, so I was able to try these bandwidth tests both with and without Hide My IP enabled. I ran 5 tests each way (with and without Hide My IP) with about 5 minutes between each test and calculated the average speed. Here are the results:
Without Hide My IP:
Download speed = 7752kbps
Streaming speed (1) = 2644kbps
Streaming speed (2) = 6735kbps
Streaming speed (3) = 10233kbps
As you can see, I'm getting good rates on all for tests. Here are the results with Hide My IP enabled:
Download speed = 6717kbps
Streaming speed (1) = 102kbps
Streaming speed (2) = 57kbps
Streaming speed (3) = 84kbps
The download speed is still very good (87% of the speed without Hide My IP, very respectable) but all three streaming speeds have gone to hell (barely 1% of the speed without Hide My IP). In fact in 4 out of the 15 streaming tests I got a streaming speed of 0kbps (i.e. no bandwidth at all).
This is obviously what is killing streaming video from the UK via Hide My IP. My question is, does anybody have any suggestions on anything I can try to improve matters? Is there some protocol I need to enable in Hide My IP or is this a known problem with the software?
Any suggestions would be very welcome!
Thanks,
Paul
