Not in the same way an anti-virus or firewall program would.

Hackers and identity thieves can use your IP addresses to compromise your computer. With your real IP address they can install keyloggers, Trojans, and other tools to aid their crime. By hiding your IP, it makes far more difficult for them to locate you and invade your computer with those kinds of programs.
