Hi.

Im living in Canada and am thinking of using HMIP for watching the BBC iPlayer in high quality mode.
This requires a minimum throughput of 1Mbps.

Using a UK premium IP, Is this sort of throughput guaranteed (with the odd hiccup of course) by yourselves?
I have a stable 10Mbit cable non-contended connection this side.

Cheers.

We're not an ISP, so we do not guarantee the connectivity speed of your computer. Any competitor that did that would be foolish.
There are too many variables over which we have no control to make such a representation: the age and processing speed of your computer; what background programs you have running and so forth.

We do guarantee that your IP will be hidden in an approved browser if the software is configured properly.

We also have many customers who need a UK IP in order to use the iBBC Player (with our Premium Service Subscription) and many US residents that are overseas that need, and successfully use, our software to watch American TV such as Fox News and other American based content.

Hi Doug,

Thanks for the info.
Through testing via the trila UK servers I have connected through, they are all in Maidenhead and give me an average of 500-600Kbps upload (or download, whichever way you want to look at it laugh.gif ).
In light of this, can you comment on average upload through a premium UK server IP?
Just a rough example of the 'difference' you are advertising as the pay service.
This way I can properly evaluate costs.

Cheers.

"trila"

Any update on my question please?

Ball park difference in throughput between premium and standard?

If you advertise there is a difference, and therefore a monthly charge, then it must be measurable.

The post wasn't deleted. Your last 3 posts were merged for the sake of continuity for the string.

The enhanced speed that our customers enjoy from using the Premium Service Subscription comes from the priority Premium users get in the ques. We reserve the highest speeds for the Premium users. If not many people are using the system, then the Basic version users and the Premium Service users may both experience nearly equal speeds. But, during high traffic times, Premium users get priority access/speed.

Based upon that, there is no way we can give an assessment/comparison/percentage of one speed over another. To do so could be considered misrepresentation.

The quality of streaming video depends on location more then anything.

If you are in South Korea, and connect to our UK proxy the video information has to travel from the source server, to our UK server, then from our server to you, the customer. Our server will most likly be connected to different Internet backbones then connecting directly to the UK video server. This path of data, is a variable and the speed is therefore very unpredictable.

All our proxies are capable of supporting many steaming videos but the factor of what video service is being used is going to be a variable factor as well in terms of the quality/speed of the video stream.

Many video steaming websites let you use a lower bandwidth version. By providing you with a faux IP address, Hide My IP is letting you watch these streaming videos you normally could not see at your current location.

Doug,

Thanks for the in-depth answers.
Unfortunately I will not be buying this product for my intentions as I cannot confirm this will work for me.

-Can I trial the Premium for a day to see? wink.gif

If it works I'd buy it instantly.

When you purchase the basick Hide My IP 2009 version of the software for $29.95, the company will provide you with a free, 3 day trial to the Premium Service Subscription. In that way, you can test the Premium Service and see if it meets your needs.

Not sure how a free, 3 day non-limited trial to something is a "catch" ... wacko.gif

I use HMIP with BBC iPlayer. The following may help ...

I capture the streaming video (FLV) rather than use the iPlayer download feature. The quality is not as good, for sure, but then there is no DRM to consider. Also, the UK proxy is required only to initiate the FLV capture. By nature, capturing an hour-long programme takes a hour, sometimes upto 1.5 hours.

The download feature requires the UK proxy for the entire download because the licence keys are sent at the end. This, obviously, hammers the proxy servers and makes for slow downloads, given the size of the video files. At least, that's the way it was a year or so ago.

Apart from rare outages (like today!), I have not had any real issues FLV capture from BBC iPlayer.
